CNVC LT
Welcome to the CNVC Leadership Team (LT) and Board section of NVCwiki. The goal of this area is to enable CNVC LT & Board members and others they might select, to edit official documents. It is our hope that two needs may be met in this way. First, the CNVC LT will be able to collaborate on the creation of official documents by using this wiki interface. Second, anyone interested in better understanding CNVC decisions will be able to watch the documents evolve and add their own comments and suggestions in the Public Comment areas. Board and LT meetings have recently been combined due to the extensive overlap in agenda, but beginning sometime in 2007 we anticipate holding them separately.

Feedback on proposal to move to Albuquerque From Jim Manske
Previously the LT cited the following reasons motivating the exploration of a move to Albuquerque (ABQ). I have commented briefly on what I have learned in the last 30 days, then added some considerations below.
- Planned future programs, IITs and other training in Albuquerque.
- There is ample capacity within ABQ to accomodate our needs.
- People active in CNVC administration are living in Albuquerque.
- Currently the list includes Marshall, Valentina, Jim and Jori. Danielle and William intend to move to ABQ. We have identified two strong candidates for Office Manager living in Albuquerque. Miguel and Dee continue to consider moving to ABQ, although at present they are not intending to move there. Christina and Sol intend to stay in California. I am not clear on Jenna's intentions in the moment.
- Cost effective operations.
- In May 2006, Forbes magazine ranked ABQ #1 in a list of "Best Places for Businesses and Careers". For the cost of doing business, ABQ ranked 1st among about 200 of the USA's largest metropolotan areas.

- It is likely that CNVC's operational expenses will be reduced in ABQ. The location we will be occupying initially will likely be significantly less expensive than the office and storage facilities in La Crescenta.

- Friendlier regulatory environment for non-profit operation.
- Jori may have information on this.
- Easy access to international airport.
- The ABQ "Sunport" is 15 minutes or less from virtually any part of ABQ. It is serviced by major carriers including Southwest, Northwest, Delta, and USAirway/AmericaWest
- Growing local NVC community that is receptive to hosting the CNVC office.
- There are currently about 900-1000 people on the NM-NVC mail list. NVC has a presence in local schools, government agencies, jails, mediation community, several businesses, the therapeutic community, the spiritual community etc.
- Two of the candidates for the recent office manager position emerged from the NVC community. Another was connected to the Peace and Justice community which has been an ally of NVC for many years.
- Volunteer community available.
- We have already received several offers of volunteer service.
Remaining Considerations:
- Financial Cost of Move.
- We won't know til we get there, but I would estimate this to be at least $20,000 and could be as high as $50,000. We have not yet received requests from employees who are not going to ABQ, and we do not have accurate estimates of the costs associated with moving the employees who are going. Moving estimates for some office equipment, files, records, etc are approximately $14000. One bidder may be able to save us 25%, but he will not give us the bid until next week. Replacement cost of unmoved items (if we decide to leave office equipment behind) is likely to be at least several thousand dollars, and there is still some stuff (eg files, inventory, records, telephone system, computers, etc that still will be moved at some cost.)
- Timing.
- We have two strong candidates for the office manager position who will be ready to go to work with 2 weeks notice to their current employers.
- Preparation work has begun in the LA office, and we have a long way to go!
- Minor problem with internet/telephone infrastructure. (Not a show stopper, according to William)
- Interruption of service to our community, especially book and material orders.
- We need to strategize on how to inform previous customers of our new location, and implement ASAP.
- Focus on moving distracts from other important projects, eg IT and GCC
Conclusions
I would recommend that the LT make a commitment to moving to Albuquerque as soon as possible with a target date of May 7. The clarity of that decision will help to focus the staff on contributing the resources necessary to accomplish the move with as much ease and grace as possible. It will also contribute to the staff members so that they can plan their next moves. It will also contribute to creating stability as we will be enabled to commit to hiring a new office manager.

Timeline of Move:
- The current target date for opening an office in Albuquerque is Monday, May 7.
Concerns of Staff
- Time frame of move
- Some staff members see this as a workable time frame. Others are less optimistic. We need to remain flexible as events unfold and continuously update feasibility.
- Severance?
- Employees are encouraged to look for a job and take care of their needs if they are not moving with the office. We would enjoy them being with us as long as it works for them.
- Some staff members are leaning toward relocating; some are leaning toward staying in LA. Those that are staying are considering their needs. They expect it to take 1 – 4 months to obtain comparable employment and would like CNVC’s financial support during their transition. How much money does the board anticipate it could allocate for severance, including benefits. (Jim recommends that each staff member consider their specific needs and offer a proposal to the B/LT.)
- Relocation reimbursements
- Some staff members are leaning toward relocating. They would like CNVC’s support in covering all reasonable moving expenses. What allowance does the Board anticipate? (Jim recommends that each staff member consider their specific needs and offer a proposal to the B/LT.)
- IRS allows reimbursement of some moving costs.
- Salary in NM
- Staff members considering the move want assurance that their pay rate will remain the same, which will contribute to a higher standard of living. Is the Board willing to commit to this request?
- LT response: Employees that move will keep the same pay (although no raises will be considered until their pay rate is comparable NM rates). New employees will be paid NM rates.
- Virtual Office Options
- Some staff members would like to have the possibility of continuing their contributions to CNVC through “virtual strategies,†that is by working from home and logging on the CNVC network server. Does the LT see this as possible and/or desirable?
- LT response: Some jobs have already been done virtually and they can be considered for this. Financial functions and material sales will be in the office with some of the administrative. (need for community)
- Temporary HQ? Move twice? Suitability of location?
- The Via Seville property in Albuquerque is a temporary location. Although local zoning laws allow a “low-key†operation focusing on telephone and mailing services, the growth of CNVC will require a different office set-up sooner or later. Some staff recommend “slowing down,†and locating the permanent location before investing in the move. Concern about delivery trucks and parking in a residential area was also expressed. Does the LT or Board have feedback on this consideration?
- We intend to get feedback from the network and consultants
- Although the network has been notified through email and the wiki, we have received very little feedback (About a dozen emails). I have also spoken with 2 professional consultants who donated their time to CNVC. Gratitude to Sharon Colby and Jamie Conglose for the support!

3/9/07 Announcement: Researching CNVC Office Relocation from LA to ABQ
We are excited to announce that research and planning has begun for relocating the CNVC office from its current space in Los Angeles to Albuquerque, New Mexico. The final decision on this move will not be made until research is complete, but current indications are that it will go ahead as envisioned.
A summary of the factors and initial discussion regarding this move may be found in the 2/07 Board/LT Conference Minutes.
After extensive Board and LT discussion and in consultation with organizational experts the Board decided in favor of taking action. Our process is to first investigate in more depth the factors involved while simultaneously beginning dialog with current staff. We have also placed an advertisement in the Albuquerque newspaper, seeking to hire an Office Manager to assist with the research, planning and move.
A primary consideration for the Board is that any such move address the needs of staff, who have contributed so greatly to our growth and effectiveness for many years. We also aim to address the ongoing needs of CNVC, as changes begun in recent months move forward. Presuming that a final decision to go ahead with this move is reached within the next few weeks as anticipated, the entire process will be completed this Summer with no interruption of CNVC office services.
Further announcements will be made as the move progresses, to keep you informed of developments. As always, we welcome dialog with the entire CNVC network and look forward to continued growth with your help.

Statement of Intent

I am pleased to share that the Board and the Leadership Team are considering moving the Center to New Mexico, USA. The reasons we are considering this move include:

Note that for the first part of this Conference in Albuquerque the Board and LT met jointly to facilitate ease of dialog about the many changes begun at the October Conference in North Carolina where we distinguished between the Board, LT, and GCC. Board and LT teleconference meetings have recently been combined due to the extensive overlap in agenda, but beginning sometime in 2007 we anticipate holding them separately.

On month to month basis. Specific dates to do the "how goes it" with all 4 (MBR&V and Jori). request to take NVC training. Board and LT participate in the 3 month "how goes it" session.

Invitation to Robert Gonzales to be a member of the CNVC board for 2 years.
- Note: efforts will be made to coordinate Robert's schedule with the Rosenbergs and other members, when setting meeting dates. One strategy discussed for future Conferences is to consider holding them in Albuquerque to facilitate ease for Robert and the Rosenbergs.

Stefan to be a board member for 1 more year. (till March 2008).
- Note: discussion included the importance of continuity in membership as new members are recruited, and the need for more members and particularly for officers such as Treasurer. The character of the Board is anticipated to change, as leaders from related organizations are invited to join and bring their outside perspective.

- Comment: This decision had to do with choosing the rate for CNVC staff benefits, and included consideration of their needs and the current financial soundness of the organization.

Discussion
- Conciousness. The essence of NVC is more than the 4 steps. How can we make it a more central part of the training? Our training could be more powerful. The consciousness is the center, and transforms our relationships with family, friends and self.
- Social change. We are doing a good job of connecting people with their families and themselves, but don't always help them to see the social change part. Their consciousness effects the economy and other social systems. How do we as a community want to contribute to social change? Beyond helping people to bring more consciousness to their close relationships with NVC, it's also important to inspire them at the same time to take it further and help to transform society in life-serving ways.
- Consciousness in the CNVC office is an important area where we're continuing improvement.
- Media is crucial for extending our contributions. For example, spreading NVC in different languages via video and making a 9-CD set with focus on social change.
- Connecting within the network is crucial. Projects happen without everyone's knowledge.
- How can we increase the connection and collaboration within the B/LT for our decisions?
- We are all driven by our CNVC mission. For most of us a big challenge has been in creating and maintaining loving connection with close colleagues. Although those needs are generally met, we have sometimes been tempted to retreat into ourselves as a protective mechanism when not feeling safe.
- All of us want to direct more attention to the social change elements of NVC.
- Social change example: project for Mexican women.
- Get group of trainers to focus on specific social change tasks.
- A fulltime Media person would focus on getting awareness of all CNVC work out around the world.
- GCC is link to projects, they have connection already.
- Working with a fundraiser would enable us to do many more things.
- A full-time institutional fundraiser might enable large-scale social change projects funded by UN, World Bank, Foundations or Corporations, etc.
- Get trainers for introductory talks instead of MBR.
- MBR do more specific trainings, like mediation or weekend for Certification Team. MBR in more advanced trainings.
- Newsletter. Send them out with book orders, and make sure organizers are printing them for IITs and workshops.
- "Newspaper" on our new website, something like google news, focused on the key aspects of social change where we would like to focus: Busines/Economics, Restorative Justice, Education, Government, Personal Liberation.
"Picture Forming" on Office Relocation
John Buck facilitated this Sociocratic process as a focus for further integration of tools into our NVC meeting process, while also exploring the overall topic of whether to consider an office move.

- Need giraffe consciousness community and volunteer pool. LA has less of both.
- How fill the positions we need.

- Stability & continuation of work being done (during transition). Challenging.
- How would move support our mission? Many considerations.
- Could be both organization center & community center.
- What is the symbolism in the move? ABQ still in U.S.

- Rosenbergs would be convenient to people working in office if in ABQ.

Marshall's Statement to the NVC network
My wife, Valentina, and I would like to share our celebrations with you stimulated by the October CNVC Conference. We celebrated that CNVC now has NVC groups working in 65 countries on every continent and about 1/4 million people per year are receiving our training. We then shared our vision that within the next 10 years we would like to have NVC teams in every country and NVC reaching millions of people through mainstream media outlets.
We want to share with you how touched and celebratory we are feeling at the response of everyone present to this vision. To achieve these two visions we are radically transforming our organization.
- Valentina and I will be leading a Leadership Team, (LT) formalizing what has been our unofficial role.
- We are encouraging all trainers to operate, not on their own, but in association with local NVC circles so that they work together to support the NVC mission. To support this organizing effort, Jim and Jori Manske will focus on building the Global Coordinating Council (GCC).
- We are also taking steps to synergize with other organizations who are also working for a transformation in consciousness.
- We will expand the number of NVC trainers on the CNVC staff to better meet the number of requests for training and ensure continuity of CNVC’s services.
- We are also creating means of making our training available through the media.

Meine Frau, Valentina und ich möchten gerne unser Feiern mit Euch teilen, das vom kürzlichen Boardmeeting des CNVC in der Nähe von Atanta, Georgia, angeregt wurde. Das Center for Nonviolent Communication hat nun GFK-Gruppen, die in 65 Ländern und in jedem Kontinent der Erde arbeiten mit über 1/4 Mio. TeilnehmerInnen an den Trainings, die dort gegeben werden. Beim diesem Boardmeeting haben wir über unsere Visionen gesprochen: dass wir innerhalb der nächsten 10 Jahre GFK-Teams in jedem Land der Erde haben und dass die Gewaltfreie Kommunikation Millionen Menschen durch die Haupt-Medien (mainstream media outlets) erreicht.
Wir möchten mit Euch teilen, wie berührt und voller Dankbarkeit wir uns fühlen durch die Reaktionen von allen, die diese Vision teilen. Um diese beiden Visionen erreichen zu können, werden wir unsere Orgnaisation grundsätzlich verändern.
Valentina und ich werden ein Leading Team (LT) führen, dadurch werden wir nun formell das tun, was bisher unsere inoffizielle Rolle war.
Wir ermutigen alle TrainerInnen, nicht mehr alleine zu wirken, sondern zusammen mit den lokalen GFK-Kreisen, damit sie zuammenarbeiten, um die Mission der Gewaltfreien Kommunikation zu unterstützen.
Damit die organisatorischen Bemühungen vorangehen, werden sich Jori und Jim Manske darauf konzentrieren, das Global Coordinating Council (GCC) aufzubauen.
Wir werden auch Schritte unternehmen, um Synergien mit anderen Organisationen zu erreichen, die auch auf eine Bewusstseinsänderung hinarbeiten.
