Jason Felice: update agile manifesto link, reply to Markus

What is a good way to respond to this RFP? Right here?--Jason Felice
:Yes, this works, although dialog via wiki seems awkward to me as I understand it. --John W.

To give a sense of my reaction to the RFP, I'm pretty excited seeing a way I can contribute to NVC, and also excited seeing recognition of this need for online connection. At the same time, seeing reference to Drupal, and to having a lot of functionality spelled out up front, I'm a bit anxious--while I have worked with Drupal and could implement it, I am aware of other ways to develop this site which I predict would better serve the needs of CNVC.

:I'm curious what other ways you envision. What seems attractive about CivicSpace is that it's a selection of some great Drupal modules that have been pretty much tested to work together, with a fairly user-friendly front end configuration menu. We could probably have it up and ready for use within a month, and add features and modules later if desired. Are you thinking of another open source product? If so, does it have similar features and semi-automated front end? --John W.

Hmm. As I think about this now, I'm noticing that my ideas are colored by what I was planning to do with the Practice Group Finder Idea. Maybe the same ideas don't apply to RFP.
:To me the RFP might be useful as an overview of the database needs, even though it is probably somewhat outdated now. -JW

In any case, reading "we could probably have it up and ready for use within a month, and add features and modules later if desired," it looks like ease in getting started is important to you.
:Yes, the current webmaster is very concerned about the stability of the "InsideCNVC" parts of the site because they're built with ASP.net and MS Access. Also, the fundraising people desperately need CRM and it looks like CiviCRM 1.4 will meet most of those needs. -JW

I was more focused on adapting quickly to needs and involving the community in the development process - so I had concluded that the agile development philosophy would be a win. I had presumed starting from scratch because of that, but I now wonder if that assumption can be usefully challenged.

The agile techniques I would incorporate would mean that the system could have very sort iterations (one or two weeks), each one showing new functionality and going "live" quickly. This enables quick responses to community and other stakeholder feedback on what works, what doesn't, and typically elicits new possibilities for value which weren't previously seen. Hence the term "agile."
:Thanks for the extra info. I'm guessing that because so many things are needed, it would take a long time to get the sort of features already developed in CS. Also, because CS has evolved over time in a way similar to what you describe it will probably bring a degree of order. That is, other nonprofits have already collectively invested many hours identifying what's needed. Adopting their solution will provide a structure the office can use to adapt their practices. Then over time they would identify different needs or features. Could those then be developed with an agile approach, and still be suitable for offering back to CS and Drupal as modules? -JW

Over all, this would be a shift from thinking about this as a site or software package, to thinking about this as a process for enabling and meeting community needs.

At this point, noticing that this approach is likely much different from what you were expecting, I'm feeling a little worried owing to my desire to anticipate how I'm received. Would you (and anyone else, too!) be willing to let me know what needs are met or unmet by this?
:I'm intrigued by your suggestions and wanting to better understand what the implications would be for CNVC. My impression right now is that an agile approach would mean that tools developed that way might not be compatible with CS as part of the package. Instead they would be free-standing applets that could be called from CS. Is this correct? So my feelings are curiosity, interest and appreciation. The needs met for me right now are community, exploration and contribution. -JW

Thanks --Jason Felice

Jason, do you like to have community envolved ?
:I love to have the community involved - I'd like to contribute in such a way as to best meet needs - to meet my need to contribute to others.
And also like to be careful about providing to much functions for startup ?
:I deeply value simplicity in systems - as a sort of beauty first of all, and as a pragmatic need for effectiveness when working with code. I can think of times I've seen unused features when adding functionality to a package, imagined I could be breaking something in there because of the feature I'm adding, and felt frustrated because of a need to have a sort of pride in my work.
So that the system has the neccessary functions and easy to handle ?
:Yes. :)
And the community has the chance to be part of the process and can grow with the system ?
:Absolutely. :)

I am interested in your thoughts and waiting for response.
Probably its more effective and fast if me make an appointment in irc ?

:I regret that I haven't had the chance recently, and I'm hoping to connect soon. I'm curious how you are reacting to what I wrote above... --JF
I updated the agile manifesto link above.

I'm thinking using agile techniques with civic space might work, and also thinking that maybe some pieces could become their own project.
Practice Group Finder Idea
2006-05-15T19:29:54Z

Jason Felice: Related to RFP?

You practice NVC... you've read a whole bunch of books. You've been able to attend a class or two. You have this nagging feeling that, while you can draw circles and arrows and illustrate all of the concepts, that your knowledge just isn't deep enough to practice. You'd like a practice group!

But lo, where can you find one? You know of that one over there, but they are full. You've gone to a class or two, but that's quite a drive away. Perhaps you have a couple of very young children and can't get out enough to connect and find people nearby. What do you do?

So... you go to this new site. You pop your zip code into the upper right-hand corner and click the button. Out pops a list of three practice groups. The first one has a particular focus... interesting, perhaps another time that would be more meaningful for you. The second one meets eight miles away and is looking for members!

So you click a button and up pops an edit box and in it you type, "Hey! Am I glad I found you. I've been looking for some practice group to deepend my NVC..."

OR

There is no group which meets your needs. So you think, "Why don't I wait for other people?" You click a button, enter your details, and a couple months later, when four people are ready to practice, you start a group and meet in the Starbucks down the street.

Discussion (and Stuff)
So that's the idea. I've decided that I'm going to do it. I've also decided that I want this to be an very open and collaborative project, and that I want it to develop from rough prototype with non-working buttons to full-featured site supporting NVCers worldwide in a completely transparent, participative fasion. In other words, I'll code it and maintain it, but I don't want to own it.

At this point, I would enjoy feedback on:

* The core idea: Does this meet any needs? Which ones? Does this leave any needs unmet? How?
* Integration with other NVC sites? Any unmet needs around another site?
* Would you use it?
* Is there anything unclear in the above description?

Also, if anyone wants to work with me to build this site, sign below or contact me. Technical people and contributions are welcome, but I'd like to stress that my biggest need at the moment is finding the community to support with the site (making purpose concrete), and beginning dialog.

Howdy!

Michael Nagler's book Is There No Other Way? shattered my worldview and put it back together in a different way, one which acknowledges the power of nonviolence. For that I am grateful.

I was introduced to Nonviolent Communication by User:John Abbe by a post which he made over on Orkut introducing NVC to the folks in the nonviolence community. And for this I am grateful, as well.

I am a technology consultant and system designer and programmer, and enjoy exploration of nonviolence-related ideas, application of them, and finding synergies between the philosophy of nonviolence and things like management practices and systems thinking. Perhaps I will write articles about those here. I think I will use this page as a sort of blog, then.

There are different approaches to arriving at an understanding of violence in this sense. The first part of the page is more Western-seeming, and the second part is more Eastern (mental formations, dualism). I wonder if there is a useful distinction which can be named here, or if I'm just reacting to the character I am imagining of, say, a German philosopher versus a Vietnamese monk.
I depersonalized the writing style a bit to post here--the wikipedia-style "third person" voice. I think that works here, too. Hmm, there's some thinking behind that.

I knew there was a page on social change. So on a page where social change was mentioned i made a link to Social change. But it looked like a link to a page that doesn't exist. So i checked the spelling and the actual page is Social Change. I imagine this kind of thing is going to happen many times to me and other people. I checked right away and fixed it, but not everyone will do this, and we will end up with multiple pages on the same topic, creating lots of work for wiki editors to merge pages, fix links, etc. So, i am wondering if there is a setting for MediaWiki that we can change so that it treats Social Change, Social change, social Change and social change all as the same thing. (aha, i see that the 2nd and 4th ones are already treated as the same!) --John Abbe 02:17, 21 December 2005 (CET)
I guess the Wikipedia community has allready been confronted to this kind of problem, and has made a robot to prevent this kind problem. For example, after having set up theses pages :
* http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Communication_non_violente&oldid=404347
* http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nonviolent_communication&oldid=3397727

I wanted to set the Italien version of it by copying the text of presentation used here :
* http://www.centroesserci.it/comunicazione.asp

but a robot discovered it was a copy of an existing page, and then removed the article.
There is half of a spam solution here: http://peterkaminski.com/archives/000462.html
When the system that helps us share blacklists among sites is created, then we can try it out. Actually, we could create our own blacklist. I haven't checked yet, but i think a lot of what's getting posted is the same links over and over. --John Abbe 09:20, 21 December 2005 (CET)
Thus we could have a page in the wiki which shows where to pull the current code from, and where people who enjoy hacking a bit (like myself), can code some feature, or write a new CSS theme, for example, and then e-mail off a patch guaranteed to work against the code you are running.

(By the way, who has access to the installed code?)

I won't be available for theses days. Sorry :(
What about "Nonviolence" itself?
A conflict: On the one hand, I would enjoy preserving the focus of the wiki on NVC, and contributing to expanding this message of NVC; on the other hand, I would enjoy the synergies I imagine would happen if I folded my nonviolence wiki content (a very small amount of content right now) into this wiki and shut down my wiki.

Would a couple people be willing to share the following?:

# whether you predict bringing nonviolence-only topics into this wiki would affect the focus in a way you would not enjoy
# whether some other needs may or may not be met by doing this

It may be useful information to consider that I intend to regularly contribute some effort on the issue of nonviolence to a wiki, whether this one or my own.

It was only started a week ago, so there is not much to show yet; however, there is some content which illustrates what I am going for. Specifically, the book by Michael Nagler or the article contributed by Andreas about Gandhi's philosophy.

It would meet my needs just fine. I was very dubious about the term "nonviolence" when i first came to NVC. After some learning, i am much happier with it (although i still think that it is often not a word i want to start with when explaining thins spirit to people). My learning would have happened much faster if there had been a lot of good information about nonviolence in one place. I imagine others having that learning faster as you and others add info here, which meets my needs for hope, others' understanding, etc. --John Abbe 02:43, 21 December 2005 (CET)
Thanks, John.

My box was haxored, and I have decided to simply use this wiki instead of reconfiguring the one I had running, but to be attentive to peoples reactions about focus in doing so. --Jason Felice

Jason Felice: Introducing me

Hello Markus !

how about setting up a multilingual wiki :
So we would have

* http://en.nvcwiki.org
* http://de.nvcwiki.org
* http://fr.nvcwiki.org

with links between pages, like for www.wikipedia.org :)

we are allready working on the subject here :
Sounds like a great idea! User:Markus Pallo and i talked about this earlier. We definitely want to get there eventually. We're just getting started, don't have the time and people resources to do it yet, so we thought we would start in English and see how things go. I'm certainly open to shifting, especially if you have the people resources to help make it happen!

Will we see you at NVC Wiki Day?
Hi,

as John told, we thought about multilingual wiki.
I will try to make some experiments for setting up several languages at the beginning of the next year.
for me it seems not like a bug, it looks like a spam spider which adds generic content.
At the moment i have no idea how to protect this, without introducing required logins.
Did you have any ideas ?
I guess the Wikipedia community has allready been confronted to this kind of problem, and has made a robot to prevent this kind problem. For example, after having set up theses pages :
* http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Communication_non_violente&oldid=404347
* http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nonviolent_communication&oldid=3397727

I wanted to set the Italien version of it by copying the text of presentation used here :
* http://www.centroesserci.it/comunicazione.asp

but a robot discovered it was a copy of an existing page, and then removed the article.
